Illusions of Forever

We often hear, see, or read the word forever used to describe immortal beings or romances. I think we often forget or ignore where we also use forever even if we never voice it. Friendship, I think, is the one time we often think of forever but never voice it. When we're children and make friends, we often dream of having that person by our side for the rest of our life. We think we have found friends that will last us a lifetime but usually we drift apart from those initial companions.

Adults today are lucky to have a handful of friends that aren't related to their work. They are even more fortunate to have those friends from their college days or prior.

What happened to those dreams of forever with our friends? With all the different and easy ways to stay in contact in this day and age why are we still losing so many friends? Is it us or is it all the distractions today's society gives us?

New challenge: Write about fanfic or an original work about a character realizing where friends are concerned, forever is a lot shorter than we think.
